Thing is, we don’t have to do it all at once. Baby steps. This week, I’m taking my next step by utilizing a countertop indoor compost bin.

As a midlife mom and business owner, I can’t start my day without a couple of cups of coffee. We decided after returning from our trip to Costa Rica to stop using the single-use coffee pods in our coffee maker. We wanted to get rid of both the excess plastic and foil in our trash can, and to reduce our exposure to it on a daily basis, while having better coffee. (And now we drink it black!) We bought a bunch of reusable coffee pods and now we refill them each morning with fresh-ground coffee. But what to do with those leftover coffee grounds?
Now we can put them in our countertop kitchen compost bin! It turns them, and the mix of food scraps, into usable compost. We put it amongst our garden plants — vegetables like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers — and our flowers. We even use it on our roses by our font door, with the bonus of the coffee helping deter pests. We have so much vegetable waste, but now I feel good about it instead of bad.
