Disney’s new live-action remake of the beloved classic, Lion King, hits theaters on July 18 with an amazing star-studded cast: Beyonce, Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Keegan-Michael Key, Alfre Woodard and more. With all this talent, and an already incredible story, it’s sure to be another massive hit.
I’m headed to the premiere next week, and I am beyond excited! To see the movie at the Dolby Theater, and to be a part of the festivities — including an after-party — is a huge bucket list item for me. My older two kids were big fans of the original animated version of the Lion King, so it’s even more special for me to see this new one.
There’s still a couple of weeks before the movie is out for all to see, but the below featurette, “The King Returns” is a fun prelude to the movie and contains some never-before-seen footage. Have a look!
Disney also sent me these photos of the Lion King cast with their characters from the movie. How cool are these??
Images include Donald Glover with Simba; Beyoncé Knowles-Carter with Nala; John Oliver, Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner with Zazu, Pumbaa and Timon; Chiwetel Ejiofor with Scar; Alfre Woodard with Sarabi; Eric André, Florence Kasumba and Keegan-Michael Key with hyenas Azizi, Shenzi and Kamari; and Shahadi Wright Joseph and JD McCrary with Young Nala and Young Simba.
From the latest Disney press release:
Disney’s “The Lion King,” directed by Jon Favreau, journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. Staying true to the classic story, Favreau utilizes pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring the iconic characters to the big screen in a whole new way. Also featuring James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon, Disney’s “The Lion King” opens in U.S. theaters on July 19, 2019.
