Why I Yoga… Why Do You Yoga? More on Corepower Yoga’s #WhyIYoga

There are a lot of reasons why I yoga.

My physical health.

To be strong.

Peaceful moments.

Focused thinking.

My mental health.

Stretched and tone muscles.

Time for just me.

Yoga’s misleading — it is far harder than it looks, but the payoff is huge. When I’m practicing yoga, it’s all about me. Moms need that. Women need that. Men need that, because yoga’s for everyone. During practice, yoga requires you to focus on your body and your breath. I used to worry about keeping my mind free of other worries and thoughts but when doing yoga properly, that all falls away anyway. There’s little time to consider your grocery list for dinner if you’re trying to balance and exhale at the right time during the pose. Yet it’s not a difficult thing to do, so don’t be intimidated. There is no perfect in yoga. That’s why it’s called practice. And that’s one more reason why I yoga.

A good yoga class will reinforce that. If you do take time to look around at your fellow classmates, you’ll see that they are typically all different kinds of people.  Beginners. Intermediate yogis. And advanced. No one cares if you can’t balance in tree pose or if you aren’t able to do a headstand. Everyone’s too focused on their own workout, and trust me, it is a workout.

Children can also benefit from yoga. Yoga practice can be adapted to each individual ability and interest, so if there’s an injury or sore sport to avoid, you modify the pose by not going into a stretch so deep or not extending a limb as far. It can be an excellent way to calm an active child.

CorePower Yoga began an initiative in September, called #WhyIYoga. It taps into the mindful, emotional and fun aspects of yoga, encouraging people to share the ‘why’ behind their yoga practice and what inspires and/or motivates them to come to class.  It’s a way of celebrating yogis everywhere. CorePower Yoga has distinguished itself as a place where students find ‘their own version of wellbeing.’ What a wonderful way to put it, right? No pressure to be perfect, just to do what you can and what you need.

The #WhyIYoga campaign even offers an interactive photo filter so you can upload your yoga photo along with personalized text to go with #WhyIYoga. That can be downloaded and shared on social media. There are also two tank tops available at CorePower Yoga studios nationwide. Check mine out! (I was going to put it on, but you can read it better like this….)
